RAMZY REVIEWS: "Jack Reacher: Never Stop Never Stopping"

Monotonously formulaic, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is one action thriller sequel whose title also serves as a warning.
- Rotten Tomatoes
Alright! First off, I might've gone into this movie with way too much negativity because I was initially planning on watching "Kubo and The Two Strings". Been meaning to watch it for quite a while actually but just haven't had the time to. Only one mall was showing it so I went there earlier, headed straight to their cinemas--and lo and behold, the movie was nowhere to be found! After taking a few breathes to contain my internal screams, I reluctantly decided that since I was already there, I might as well watch something just so I can make a review. How bad could it be, right? Well it turns out it was bad. Not that much, but in the end, I didn't necessarily feel like I got my money's worth.

Set four years after the events of the first film, Jack Reacher is returning to the headquarters of his old military unit. He comes to meet Major Susan Turner who has been working with him on solving cases across the country. Upon his arrival, he is informed that Turner is accused of espionage.

Alright, so this probably takes the cake as being the most generic film I've seen all year. The two leads (Tom Cruise and Colby Smulders) were pretty good, but I was never really on the edge of my seat at any point of the movie at all-which for an action movie, isn't good news. Oh, and the kid was an annoying dipshit. So minus points there, I guess. Haha. Some of the dialog was pretty bad, too, as well as some badly done dubbing. I honestly can't think of a more generic middle-of-the-road movie in recent memory. It's not terrible, but nothing close to being any good as well. Just....okay. Meh.

Looking at the good stuff the movie has though, I actually thought the action was cool. The main villain felt like a decent match for Reacher and they did a nice job of setting up the final fight which, I thought, had one of the coolest finishing moves I've seen in a movie. And that is probably my favorite part of the film as a whole, and probably the only thing that stands out in my memory even after just a few hours of viewing. It wasn't great but wasn't horrible either. I'm kinda indifferent towards it. Might be because I caught it in a bad mood or something.

"Jack Reacher: Never Go Back" is the kind of movie that critics most likely will not be fond of, but most people will enjoy. Nothing really groundbreaking, but it's a solid action flick nonetheless. Go watch it if you're a fan of the first one and are just looking for something to eat popcorn to.

We got invited last Friday over at St. Mark Hotel's Halo Restaurant for a special lunch to try out their new buffet featuring the famous Crispy Pata from Alejandro's! It goes for P348 per person and is schedule during 12-2PM on Monday-Saturday, and 6-10PM on Sundays. I for one, definitely had more than a fair share of delicious food from their pretty decent spread of various dishes ranging from a lot of staple Filipino dishes like "Inun-unan", "Kalderetang Kambing", "Chicharong Bulaklak", Pork Spare Ribs, and more!

Onto the star of the buffet, Alejandro's Crispy Pata is for sure deserving of the praise and fame that it possesses because it is so good! It's crispy, but at the same time, super tender to the point that the meat just falls of the bone really easily! And me being a big lover of Crispy Pata in general, having as much as I could have of the dish felt like food heaven. By the end, I was so full and was feeling so good, that I just couldn't help but start feeling sleepy or as I call it, the "pig syndrome". Hahaha.

Oh, and did I mention they also have a pretty nice dessert bar?

They have a crepe station, a Halo-Halo bar, and a lot of other sweets to satisfy your sweet tooth after the sumptuous meal that you just had.

Again, the buffet goes for P348 per person and is schedule during 12-2PM on Monday-Saturday, and 6-10PM on Sundays. So if you're craving for some Crispy Pata, look no further and head straight over to St. Mark Hotel during the times I listed above and have your own fill! And last but absolutely not the least, be sure to also check out my latest vlog featuring my buffet experience, and a lot of other food trip adventures that happened during the week as well!

So here's a question for you:

"Can you sing or hum a song from any of the Star Wars movies?"

The answer's a resounding "yes", right?
Well here's another question:

"Can you sing or hum a song from any of the Marvel movies?"

Now you're probably blanking out right about now. And that's too bad.

You see, since the dawn of cinema, one thing has always accompanied the motion that's taking place within the borders of the screen: music. Even back when movies were "silent", they only meant silent in that none of the people in it could talk. As the wacky mishaps and adventures of Chaplin went about, the film always had a solid giddy tune going along with it which brought about the overall tone the film is trying to set. Which is fun and humor.

A strong score has always gone hand in hand with setting the vibe for movies and more often than not, actually play a vital role towards making the movie more memorable, and most of all, determining whether its emotional beats hit or miss. In other words, if that movie is any good at all. As for the Marvel movies, yeah, they do possess competent enough music, but they just play it way too safe in that it is impossible to actually recall any of the original score that's actually in their films. I mean, I'm not going out on a limb when I say that almost none of the pieces from any of their movies' scores are memorable, right? There are a very few exceptions of course. Off the top of my head, the Avengers theme comes to mind. But even then, I can only recognize it when I actually start hearing it. Which you can listen here, by the way, just in case you've gotten curious as well.

Now, I am not saying that the movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe aren't any good at all. Far from that, actually. My whole point is basically....in that they could be doing soooo much better if they only took some risks every now and then and actually push the musical envelope. I am quite sure having more noteworthy and memorable music would just take their movies up another level. Which is what makes me kinda upset about it, really. Because I'm pretty certain nothing much is gonna change even in the future movies. And it's pretty understandable as well, because why would you mess with something that's already raking in billions? I know I wouldn't. But I digress.

Now, to really drive home the point that I'm trying to get across with this post, please do check out the fantastic video made by one of my favorite Youtubers, Every Frame A Painting. Be sure to subscribe to his channel as well if you like what you see because it's just filled with great content like that. Most are a definite must-watch if you have even the tiniest bit of interest when it comes to movies in general.

Early this week, we were invited to Mövenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu for a press dinner hosted by OPPO, the second-leading company in the country when it comes to mobile devices and accessories. The event was pretty much a get-together among the folks from OPPO, and the local media here in Cebu. And of course, to also further get the word out on their premiere handset model, the F1s.

The first of many to come, the gathering was a night filled with food, drinks and lovely company. Before the talks started, we were all treated to a hefty and delectable dinner courtesy of Mövenpick. Everyone got their fill of the food, and then got settled for the actual briefing.

OPPO F1s key features
• Beefed-up selfie camera: 16MP, 1/3.1" sensor size
• 154.5 x 76 x 7.4 mm, 160g body
• 5.5" 720 x 1,080px LCD with 267 ppi; 2.5D scratch-resistant glass
• ColorOS V3.0.0i , based on Android 5.1 Lollipop
• Very quick and accurate fingerprint reader in the home button
• MediaTek MT6750 chipset, Octa-core 1.5GHz Cortex-A53 CPU; Mali-T860MP2 GPU; 3GB RAM
• 13MP, f/2.2 camera with 1/3" sensor size; 1080p@30fps video recording and phase detection autofocus; Single LED flash
• 32GB of built-in storage and a dedicated microSD card slot
• Single-SIM or Dual-SIM variants available
• LTE Cat.6 (300Mbps); Wi-Fi a/b/g/n; A-GPS/GLONASS receiver, Bluetooth v4.0, FM radio with RDS
• Active noise cancellation with a dedicated mic
• 3,075mAh non-removable battery

All of those details considered, the OPPO F1s' design cues make it a good mass market phone. Pretty pleasing, albeit Apple-esque design, good camera, and a few other decent perks in its arsenal really makes this a desirable phone, specially with it's price at just ₱12,990.00! The OPPO F1s pretty much ticks all the boxes offering great features for such a reasonable price. I would certainly be tempted by it if I were to pick a phone in the market today with a budget around that price-point.

Lastly, I would like to thank the people from OPPO for inviting us along! Definitely looking forward to more cool stuff ahead in the future. That'll be it for now. Thanks for reading along!

RAMZY REVIEWS: "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children"

miss peregrine's home for peculiar children full movie, miss peregrine's home for peculiar children movie, miss peregrine's home for peculiar children cast, miss peregrine's home for peculiar children pdf, miss peregrine's home for peculiar children book, miss peregrine's home for peculiar children watch, miss peregrine's home for peculiar children hd, miss peregrine's home for peculiar children review

When Jacob discovers clues to a mystery that spans different worlds and times, he finds a magical place known as Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. But the mystery and danger deepen as he gets to know the residents and learns about their special powers... and their powerful enemies. Ultimately, Jacob discovers that only his own special "peculiarity" can save his new friends.

The movie is filled to the brim with a whole lot of madness including invisible monsters that eat eyeballs, shenanigans with time-travel loops, and of course, the peculiar children with special powers. It’s pretty crazy, and precisely the kind of crazy Tim Burton excels and is kind of known for, only this time, a little less gothic, and more of just plain old wacky. For the most part a least, as the movie goes on, exploring the numerous odd facets of its world, it is quite enjoyable. But then it kind of wavers as it tries to moves along and deliver its story. The movie does have its fair share of issues going on. For one, one of the supposed leads, Jacob, played by Asa Butterfield is just very wooden. I've even somewhere that his peculiarity should've been that he was a robot, because that's how his performance made him seem like. Also, the villains seemed to get less and less impressive as the movie went on. The pacing also kinda feels iffy in some places which make some of the turning points or arcs feel a little underwhelming.

But regardless, the movie still has quite a few things to offer its viewers that save the watching experience well enough. The mishmash of weird stuff going on manages to fit in with each other pretty well actually. Another highlight of the movie is Eva Green as Miss Peregrine who has such a command on every scene that she is in in that it feels very much like she holds together all of the craziness in such elegance and authority.

With regards to its overall story, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is pretty much at the level of most Young-Adult novels and the majority of their movie adaptions. There are a lot of the same formula and story beats going on, which doesn't really mean it's bad. There's just nothing too new. The universe that it is set in though, is quite endearing and interesting I find, which totally adds in to the fun and the charm. Haven't really read the book though, but I still enjoyed it and found it pretty fun and alright.
